Physical Activities in China

Understanding Physical Activities in China using the massive Gudong App Records

China’s urbanization has witnessed the stage of rapid expansion and large-scale construction, during which unprecedented risks have been brought to human health. With the emergence of the strategy of “healthy China”, issues involved in public health and physical activities have arisen public’s concern about people's happiness, and thus how to achieve a balance between sustainable development and human health is one of the most significant problems of China's urbanization. In order to promote the development of healthy cities in China, GuDong(a Chinese smartphone fitness application), the advocates and pioneers of Chinese intelligent sports, collaborating with the WHO Representative Office in China, the School of Architecture of Tsinghua University, the Beijing City Laboratory (BCL) and the China Urban Science Research Council & Urban Big Data Professional Committee, jointly issue a report on China's Urban Physical Activity Based on the App (2018) to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the physical activity level of the whole national cities.

The report on China's Urban Physical Activity Based on the App (2018) is based on the big data (30,000,000 records) of Gudong users, and take advantage of algorithm analysis and GIS visualization, to compare the activity amount and activity density between cities on the national level, then conduct an evaluation of the development of Chinese urban physical activity and spatial pattern analysis, as well as an in-depth analysis of the relationship between urban physical activities and urban factors. Through the spatial-temporal analysis, the result shows that youthfulness and centralization have become the most obvious trends. Among all the users, the number of 25-40 age group exceeds half of the total number; Besides that, the level of physical activity in the central part is stronger than the surrounding areas, which also makes the center of cities more attractive. As for the activity time, people prefer to conduct physical activities at 6:00-9:00 and 18:00-21:00, which have a consistency with people’s commuting behaviors. This promotes the formation of two groups with obvious characters " morning exercises " and "night run" who utilize spare time and keep it regular. Moreover, some urban factors included the density of green space, the density of road intersection and population density have been proved to be related to the urban physical activities. At last, this report hopes to provide a reference for the future study of urban environment and outdoor behavior, also facilitate the spread of the concept of physical activities in increasing number of cities, as well as promote the development of urban health finally.
